Objectives of the MCNP:

  • Supporting legislation that increases access to high-quality health care for all of the citizens of the Commonwealth.
  • Striving to remove barriers to care for underserved and underinsured populations.
  • Educating consumer and business groups about Nurse Practitioner services through PR/Marketing activities.
  • Networking with other Nurse Practitioner and non-nursing organizations in other states.
  • Educating legislators individually through activities such as the Annual Legislative Breakfast and direct lobbying efforts.
  • Acting as a vehicle to enhance and maintain communication between regional groups and assisting them in the fulfillment of their goals by promoting continuing education activities.

MCNP Milestones

  • 1992 Passage NP Prescriptive Authority Bill
  • 1994 Passage of 3rd Party Reimbursement
  • 1999 Formal affiliations with national NP organizations; Massachusetts regional groups unite within MCNP
  • 1999 Managed care policy for NP utilization and reimbursement
  • 2000 Mass Health PCP status; BCBS credentialing begins
  • 2003 MCNP Guidebook to Practice published
  • 2004 Passage of NP Death Pronouncement Bill
  • 2005 Filing of "An Act to Ensure Consumer Choice of NP Services," delineation as PCPs
  • 2005 Formation of MCNP Political Action Committee (MCNP-PAC)
  • 2008 MCNP Sponsored Bill, An Act to Ensure Consumer Choice of Nurse Practitioner Services is passed as part of Senate President Therese Murray's landmark legislation, Health Care Reform II: Containing Cost and Improving Quality.
